Ride Craft is here to support you at every step of your riding journey.
BHST
Learners-6L
The Basic Handling Skills Test (BHST) is your first step toward getting your motorcycle licence in New Zealand. It’s a practical assessment done in a safe, paved area away from traffic, so you can focus on your riding skills without distractions. At Ride Craft, all BHST sessions are one-on-one with your instructor – no group sessions. You’ll learn essential control skills such as balancing, cornering, braking, clutch coordination, and observation techniques.
Restricted-6r
CBTA-6R
Once you’ve earned your learner licence and gained some experience on the road, the next step is your Restricted Licence (CBTA 6R). This stage This stage shows that you can ride safely and independently on public roads. Your CBTA 6R is a real-world on-road assessment with an approved instructor who will evaluate your overall riding competence and awareness.
Full-6f
CBTA-6F
Your Full Licence (CBTA 6F) is the final step in your motorcycle licensing journey. Once achieved, you can ride any motorcycle, carry passengers, and ride any time of day or night without restrictions. You can sit your CBTA 6F assessment nine months after your restricted licence issue date, and present your certificate to NZTA once you’ve held your restricted licence for 12 months (or nine months if you’re under 25 and complete the CBTA 6F course).

FAQ
We know getting your motorcycle licence can feel a bit confusing at times, so we’ve answered some of the most common questions riders ask.
If you can’t find what you’re looking for, just get in touch – we’re happy to help.
What riding gear should I bring on the day?
You’ll need to wear a long-sleeved jacket, long pants, gloves, and sturdy enclosed footwear. A certified motorcycle helmet is required – we can provide one if needed.
What time do I need to be there?
Please arrive about 30 minutes before your course start time. This gives us a chance to complete any paperwork and get you set up before training begins.
Out of respect for other riders, anyone arriving more than 15 minutes late may lose their place in the session.
What happens if the weather turns bad?
Assessments still go ahead even if it’s raining – after all, you might find yourself riding in bad weather one day, so it’s good experience to know what to do.
If extreme conditions make it unsafe (like a cyclone), we’ll be in touch to move your booking.
Can I use my own bike?
Absolutely! You’re welcome to use your own bike as long as it’s LAMS-approved, road legal, and has a current rego and WOF. If you’re on your Learner Licence, make sure your L-plate is fitted and that your bike is up to WOF standard.
No bike? No problem – we can supply one if needed.
How do I make a booking?
Simply fill in the form on our website or give us a call. We’ll confirm a suitable date and talk you through what to expect on the day.
What is the BHST?
The Basic Handling Skills Test is an off-road practical assessment that checks you can safely control a motorcycle before you ride on public roads. It’s the first requirement for getting your motorcycle licence.
Do I need any experience before booking?
What happens once I pass?
Do you offer lessons before the test?
Yes, one-on-one sessions are available for beginners who want extra time to build confidence before sitting the BHST.
What is the CBTA 6R?
When can I do my CBTA 6R?
There’s no minimum wait after getting your Learner Licence – you can book as soon as you’re ready and feel capable on the road.
What are the restricted licence Rules
The Restricted Licence follows most of the same conditions as your Learner Licence, with one key difference – you can now remove your L-plates. You’re still required to ride solo between 5 am and 10 pm on a LAMS-approved motorcycle, and you can’t carry passengers or tow a vehicle until you hold your full licence.
What is the CBTA 6F?
What does the test involve?
You’ll be assessed on observation, positioning, communication, speed, cornering, following distance, and overall control – everything that demonstrates sound road craft..
What happens after I pass?
You’ll receive your CBTA 6F certificate to take to your local licensing agent. Once upgraded, you can ride any motorcycle, carry passengers, and ride at any time.
